Honor System Outreach

As one of the only student-led honor systems in the country, Carolina has a unique system of which we are quite proud. Each student represents this university and it is our job, whether we are a formal member of this honor system or not, to hold ourselves and our peers to the very highest standard. Honor System Outreach is charged with the tremendous job of educating students, faculty, staff, and the entire Carolina community with what it means to be a Tar Heel and lead with integrity. For more information or to get involved, please email hsoc@unc.edu.

Outreach Coordinator
As outlined in the Instrument, the Outreach Coordinator is responsible for the following:

  • Coordinating and promoting outreach activities by the Honor System
  • Working with the Faculty Honor System Advisory Committee to improve information and education relating to academic issues
  • Working with student government and other student organizations to foster information and educating regarding student conduct issues
  • Serving as an ex officio member of the Committee on Student Conduct

Each year, the Honor System Outreach Coordinator is appointed by the Student Body President, with advice from the Undergraduate Student Attorney General and Undergraduate Honor Court Chair, to serve a term of 12 months.  While preference is given to individuals who have served at least two semesters on the Attorney General's Staff or Honor Court, the only requirement for this position is that the student be at least a second semester sophomore with extensive knowledge of the Honor System.

Outreach Committee
Several members from the Attorney General's Staff and Honor Court work with the Outreach Coordinator to help plan events and carry out outreach activities.  Any UNC student interested in promoting academic integrity and healthy student behaviors can join the Outreach Committee.  Students who are interested in joining other branches of the Honor System are strongly encouraged to volunteer on the Outreach Committee to learn more about how the system operates and works to promote academic integrity on campus.

Honor & Integrity Week
Each Fall, Honor System Outreach hosts a week of events promoting academic integrity and ethical behaviors.  Below is a list of common activities held during the week:

  • Reaffirmation of the Honor Code
  • Debates on ethical issues by the Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies
  • Various ethical experts from a variety of fields
  • Mock Honor Court hearing
  • Roundtable discussion on various ethical topics

Interested in Applying?
Honor System Outreach is always looking for dedicated, hardworking students to assist in planning and coordinating outreach activities.  If you are interested in being a part of the Outreach Committee, please contact the Honor System Outreach Coordinator at hsoc@unc.edu.
